What is Mentoplasty?

Chin reshaping is also known as mentoplasty. This is a surgical procedure to reshape the chin to improve the profile, creating a pleasing balance with the rest of the face. This surgery can enhance a weak chin with an implant or reduce a too prominent chin with a reduction to the bone.

This surgery is used to proportion the face, improve symmetry and enhance the overall appearance of the face.

The procedure can also improve the neck and jawline.

How to plan for mentoplasty?2021-05-28T16:27:28+02:00

First things first, when you plan for mentoplasty make an appointment to come and see me. During your first consultation, we will discuss your goals so that you have a good understanding of what can be achieved and what the realistic expectations should be.

Mentoplasty will change the shape of your face and profile so it is very important that I know what you want to achieve. I will take photos and discuss the options for implants and procedures best suited to you.

What is the mentoplasty procedure?2021-05-28T16:19:28+02:00

The mentoplasty procedure is performed under general anaesthetic.

I will begin by cutting along the gum of the lower lip and separating it from the chin bone.

If you are having a chin reduction, a wedge of bone will be cut out and removed. For a chin reshaping, a wedge of bone will be cut and repositioned with a screw and possibly a metal plate to keep it secured. If you are having your chin moved forward, I will create a “step” in the bone.

The incision is stitched closed, and compression tape is placed on the outside of your mouth and chin for protection.

For a chin implant, an incision is made inside your mouth or under your chin and an implant, which has been sculpted to the right shape, inserted. The implant is secured to the bone with screws and the incision is stitched closed.

Occasionally fat alone is all that is required for a small augmentation.

How to prepare for mentoplasty surgery?2021-05-28T16:13:53+02:00

To prepare for mentoplasty surgery, you may be asked to stop smoking for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. Nicotine retards the healing process, and quitting for as long as possible before surgery helps improve blood flow.

You might also have to have a blood test before surgery is performed.

During the consultation be sure to disclose what medication, vitamins, and supplements you are taking. I may need to adjust this leading up to surgery. You should avoid certain medications like aspirin and some anti-inflammatory drugs. You may also need to stop taking some vitamins and supplements. Avoid any recreational drugs.

Be sure to arrange for transport to and from the clinic. You will not be able to drive yourself after the procedure.

What can I expect after a mentoplasty?2021-05-28T16:02:02+02:00

After a mentoplasty, you can expect not to feel much pain. Maybe a little pain in the first 3 – 5 days but your medication will ease this discomfort. There may be some swelling, bruising and tightness around your chin area but the compression garment will help reduce this.

Most people can return to normal activities after 10 days. Avoid exercise in these 10 days of recovery and don’t take part in contact sport for 6 – 8 weeks. For the first 2 weeks eat liquid-based or soft food only.  You should be fully recovered after 6 weeks.

What are the risks of mentoplasty?2021-05-28T16:10:17+02:00

The risks of mentoplasty include numbness in the chin and lower lip area, asymmetry, implant displacement, or bone absorption. These risks are rare and will be discussed during the consultation.

With any surgery, there is a (low) risk of post-operative infection, bleeding, and swelling.
