What is Breast Fat Grafting?
Breast fat grafting, also known as breast liposculpture, is a surgical technique that uses a patient’s own fat to enhance breast volume. This procedure involves removing fat from one part of the body , commonly the abdomen or thighs, through liposuction, processing it, and injecting it into the breasts for a more natural enhancement.
This procedure is particularly suited for patients seeking subtle breast augmentation with the added benefit of contouring another area of the body through liposuction. Breast fat grafting results in a natural look and feel, with the added advantage of improving the appearance of donor areas.
This procedure is ideal for those experiencing volume loss in the breast due to:
- Wounds & scarring
- Weight loss
- Ageing
- Tissue damage
What is involved in the Breast Fat Grafting Procedure?
The breast fat grafting process is performed under general anaesthetic and involves two main steps:
1 | Fat Harvesting
- A special fluid mix is injected into the donor area (e.g., abdomen, thighs, or buttocks) to prepare for fat removal through liposuction.
- Small incisions are made to insert a cannula (a thin metal tube) to suction out fat.
2 | Fat Processing
- The harvested fat is processed to separate healthy fat cells from blood, damaged cells, and excess fluids.
- This ensures that only purified fat is used for grafting.
3 | Fat Grafting
- The processed fat is injected into the breasts using fine cannulas. No incisions are needed in the treatment area.
- The fat is layered carefully to ensure smooth contours and natural results.
How long is the fat grafting procedure?
That will depend on the size of the area being treated and the amount of fat being transferred. Sometimes a second or even a third procedure is needed for maximum fat volume. The reason for this is that not all the fat develops a blood supply and is therefore lost in the transfer.
