What is Calf Augmentation?

Calf augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the lower leg by inserting implants. It improves the appearance of the calf muscles, creating a more defined and muscular look.

This procedure is popular with bodybuilders seeking enhanced muscle definition and individuals with naturally thin calves who desire a more proportionate lower leg shape. With a variety of implant sizes and shapes available, the procedure can be tailored to meet specific aesthetic goals.

How Calf Augmentation Improves Leg Contours

  • Enhances the size and definition of the calf muscles for a more muscular appearance.
  • Improves lower leg proportions, creating a balanced and symmetrical shape.
  • Offers immediate and satisfying results, making it a popular choice for aesthetic enhancement.

What is involved in the Calf Augmentation Procedure?

Calf augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia and involves the precise placement of implants to achieve the desired shape.

1 | Incisions

  • Small incisions are made behind the knees to access the calf area discreetly.

2 | Implant Placement

  • Implants are inserted into pockets created within the calf muscles, ensuring a natural and symmetrical appearance.
  • A second implant may be placed next to the first if additional volume or contouring is needed.

3 | Closure

  • Once the implants are positioned correctly, the incisions are carefully stitched closed.

Calf augmentation offers a customisable solution to enhance the appearance of the lower legs, providing patients with immediate results and improved confidence in their proportions.

FAQ

How to plan for Calf Augmentation?2024-12-03T11:56:45+02:00

To plan for calf augmentation book a consultation. During the first consultation, we will discuss your expectations so that you have a good understanding of what can be achieved and what the realistic expectations should be.

I will examine your calves, assess skin quality and tone, and take muscle compartment measurements, paying attention to shape and size. We will discuss your general health status as well as any pre-existing conditions.

There are several procedure and implant options available which we will discuss in detail. I will suggest the one that is right for you and discuss this procedure.

Please note that you will need 3 days of leg elevation so bear this in mind when making travel arrangements.

How to prepare for Calf Augmentation?2024-12-03T11:56:40+02:00

To prepare for calf augmentation you may be asked to stop smoking for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. Nicotine retards the healing process, and quitting for as long as possible before surgery helps improve blood flow.

You might also have to have a blood test before surgery is performed.

You should stop taking certain medications, like aspirin and some anti-inflammatory drugs. You may need to stop taking some vitamins and supplements so be sure to disclose what you are taking. Let your surgeon know whatever medication you use since you may need to adjust these. Avoid recreational drugs.

Be sure to arrange for transport to and from the clinic, since you will not be able to drive yourself after the procedure.

What to expect after Calf Augmentation?2024-12-03T11:56:35+02:00

After calf augmentation, you can expect immediately noticeable results.

Bruising and redness at the incision areas and swelling are normal. You may feel some discomfort for a few days but your prescribed medication will help.

Try and stay off your feet for as much as possible and elevate your legs. Avoid alcohol and follow a nutritious diet.

Scarring is quite well hidden behind the knee and will fade to be barely visible if at all in time.

Recovery will take up to 2 weeks and you may need crutches for a while. After about 4 – 8 weeks you can resume your normal routine under my advice.

What are the risks of Calf Augmentation?2024-12-03T11:56:30+02:00

The risks of calf augmentation, as with any surgery, is a (low) risk of post-operative infection, bleeding and swelling.

Some risks and side effects include pain, scarring, allergic reactions, skin loss, and skin discoloration. There may also be fluid or blood accumulation. There is also a risk of the silicone implants slipping out of place or rupturing and correcting this may involve further surgery.

Your surgeon will discuss all the risks with you before the procedure.
