What is a Lower Rhytidectomy?

Lower rhytidectomy, or neck lift surgery, reverses the signs of aging in the neck, lower jaw and under the chin. Excess skin and fat is removed and skin is “tightened”. A neck lift can also either remove or tighten muscle banding in the neck to smooth contours.

The results are a smoother younger looking neck with less sagging skin and creases. It can also remove the double chin or turkey neck effect and heavy jowls and lines. This procedure does not affect the face area but rather the area below, it is often combined with a deep plane facelift. Aging will continue but the appearance of your neck will be significantly improved.

FAQ

How to plan for a neck lift?2021-05-28T15:09:39+02:00

To plan for a neck lift first make a consultation. During this first consultation, we will investigate whether this surgery is suitable for you. If it is, we will discuss your goals and realistic expectations so that you have a good understanding of what can be achieved.

What is the procedure for a neck lift?2021-05-28T15:06:12+02:00

The procedure for a neck lift is performed under general anaesthetic.

I will make the type of incision to suit the procedure. This could be in the small crease under your chin only, or this combined with a facelift type incision, around the ears and back towards the hairline. Here I may tighten the platysma muscle, move and sculpt fat and prominent submandibular glands, and reposition tissue.

The skin will be redraped over the new contours and excess skin removed.

How to prepare for a neck lift?2021-05-28T14:45:04+02:00

To prepare for a neck lift surgery, you may be asked to stop smoking for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. Nicotine retards the healing process, and quitting for as long as possible before surgery helps improve blood flow.

You might also have to have a blood test before surgery is performed.

During the consultation be sure to disclose what medication, vitamins, and supplements you are taking. I may need to adjust this leading up to surgery. You should avoid certain medications like aspirin and some anti-inflammatory drugs. You may also need to stop taking some vitamins and supplements. Avoid any recreational drugs.

Be sure to arrange for transport to and from the clinic. You will not be able to drive yourself after the procedure.

What to expect after a neck lift?2021-05-28T14:42:51+02:00

After a neck lift, expect a little discomfort and tightness in the first week but the pain medication should help ease this. There may be some swelling, bruising, numbness and tingling but this is seldom severe. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

You should be able to return to normal activities within 2 – 3 weeks.

Avoid strenuous activities including heavy housework and exercise for at least 2 weeks. Avoid alcohol and smoking and minimise sun exposure. Avoid hair dryers and hair products with strong chemicals. Don’t use saunas, steam baths or spa baths while recovering.

What are the risks of a neck lift?2021-05-28T14:38:09+02:00

Risks that are specific to a neck lift surgery include hair loss around the incision area, asymmetry or uneven lines, and hematoma. Nerve injury near the lower lip can occur but is very rare.

With any surgery, there is a (low) risk of post-operative infection, bleeding, and swelling.
