What is Male Breast Reduction?

Male breast reduction surgery, also known as gynaecomastia surgery, is a procedure designed to address enlarged male breast tissue. This condition, known as gynaecomastia, is common among men of all ages, including teenage boys. It causes the male chest to swell and appear larger than usual, often leading to self-consciousness.

Male breast reduction surgery removes excess fat, tissue, and skin to contour the chest, creating a firmer, more masculine appearance. While many men seek this procedure for aesthetic reasons, it also helps achieve a more balanced and confident body image.

How Male Breast Reduction Restores a Masculine Chest

  • Removes excessive fat and glandular tissue to flatten the chest.
  • Improves chest contours for a firmer, more masculine appearance.
  • Reduces sagging or stretched skin for a natural, toned look.
  • Addresses aesthetic concerns, helping men feel more confident.

What is involved in the Male Breast Reduction Procedure?

The approach to male breast reduction varies depending on the extent of tissue and skin removal required.

1 | Liposuction Technique

In cases where excess fat is the primary concern, liposuction is often used.

  • Small incisions are made around the nipple or in the armpit area to access the fat.
  • Using advanced techniques, the fat is removed, and the chest is sculpted for a flatter, more natural contour.

2 | Excision Technique

For patients with significant glandular tissue, stretched skin, or sagging, excision is necessary.

  • Incisions are made around the nipple or in natural creases to minimise visible scarring.
  • This technique allows for the removal of both tissue and excess skin, creating a smoother, more defined chest.

3 | Customised Approach

During your consultation, I will evaluate your condition and recommend the best technique, or a combination of both, to achieve your desired results.

FAQ

How to plan for Male Breast Reduction surgery?2024-12-02T16:52:29+02:00

The first step to plan for gynaecomastia surgery is to make a consultation. At this consultation, we will discuss your expectations to find out what you would like to achieve. It is important to have realistic expectations.

I will examine your chest and discuss the various options and techniques available to you.  We will discuss and decide whether liposuction or tissue removal will produce the best results.

How to prepare for Male Breast Reduction surgery?2024-12-02T16:52:22+02:00

When preparing for gynaecomastia surgery, you may be asked to stop smoking for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. Nicotine retards the healing process, and quitting for as long as possible before surgery helps improve blood flow.

You might also have to have a blood test before surgery is performed.

During the consultation be sure to disclose what medication, vitamins, and supplements you are taking. I may need to adjust this leading up to surgery. You should avoid certain medications like aspirin and some anti-inflammatory drugs. You may also need to stop taking some vitamins and supplements. Avoid any recreational drugs.

Be sure to arrange for transport to and from the clinic. You will not be able to drive yourself after the procedure.

What to expect after Male Breast Reduction surgery?2024-12-02T16:52:15+02:00

After gynaecomastia surgery you may need drains to help to prevent haematomas and seromas (blood and tissue fluid collections). Expect to wear a compression garment for a few weeks while you recover (not needed). This will reduce swelling and discomfort and help you heal faster. Do not do any vigorous exercise or activity for about 3 weeks.

There may be some numbness or loss of sensation. This is usually temporary but, depending on the technique needed, there may be some permanent loss of nipple sensation.

You should be able to return to work within a week after gynaecomastia surgery. Normal activities can resume within a month provided you ease back into your regular routine.

What are the risks of Male Breast Reduction surgery?2024-12-02T16:52:09+02:00

The risks of gynaecomastia surgery are relatively minimal. But, as with any surgery, there is a low risk of post-operative infection, bleeding and swelling.

Other low-risk complications include blood clots, blood or fluid collecting in the breasts, cardiac and pulmonary complications and deep vein thrombosis. Excessive scarring, asymmetry, skin discoloration and poor healing of incisions are also risks. Persistent pain or numbness is another risk, which is usually temporary.

Risks and precautions will be discussed during a consultation.
